LUPA OFFERS A TASTE OF ROME VIA NYC
This is one of my all time favorite Italian restaurants!
Opened in 1999, Lupa, named after a Roman she-wolf, is still one of Mario Batali’s greatest creations.
Casual atmosphere, moderate prices and heavenly food are the tenants to its success. Cruz Goler, a ten year Batali vet formerly at Del Posto, stepped into the executive chef position towards the end of 2007 and has not disappointed. The menu is full of hearty traditional Roman fare that is sure to impress even the staunchest critics.
I recommend the antipasti like Salami and Prosciutto Di Parma, but anything you order would be a wise choice. The ingredients are all fresh and there is even a salumeria that serves Italian artisan meats and cheeses. The moderate prices, with main dishes running around $16, belie the quality of the food.
The other reason I go is the extensive wine list. Nearly every region of Italy is represented and you can usually find some very special vintages. For those not interested in wine, the bar also offers grappas, desert wines and sambucas, not to mention the largest selection of bitters in the city.
Bon Appetite!
