BUDDAKAN: OFFERING BOTH BIG FLAVOR & A BIG SPACE

The first thing you’ll notice about Stephen Starr’s Buddakan is its size.  In a city where many restaurants cater to a small group of 12-20 tables, this 16,000 sq ft., 275 seat wonder is enormous and just as stylish as its Meatpacking District add!

On the top level at the front is a bar, which is usually packed during the evening on weekends.  It is also a popular spot for the young and upwardly mobile to relax after work during the week.

Straight past the bar and on the same floor is a dining space which allows you to look below onto the vast lower banquet hall and giant overhanging wooden chandeliers.  It literally feels as if you’ve walked in to an Asian mansion.  It is momentarily awe-inspiring.

While some elaborately decorated venues replaces the quality of food with design, Buddakan’s fare is on par with its spatial elegance.  Serving  “modern Asian cuisine,” this is a great place to go with a large group.  There is a banquet table that seats 36 and is wonderful for large corporate dinners.  groups of 15 or more can rent out part of the venue for special events.

Chef Lon Symensma serves everything from Wok Hay Frog Legs to Chili Crab to interesting tofu choices and spring rolls stuffed with tuna tartare.

There are also a number of delicious deserts and extremely well-crafted cocktails.  The Crying Chocolate will almost  make you cry literally as it weeps and melts its way along your tongue.  The cocktail Heat is made with tequila, Cointreau and cucumbers muddled with a chili paste and is a delicious choice.
