Julia Roberts and her hubby Danny Moder have been taking in the sites and pleasures of Rome during breaks from their latest movie Duplicity.

But you don’t have to be famous to enjoy this wondrous historical place, which welcomes people with open arms.

Rome is by far one of the hottest tourist hubs in all of Italy. April through June is comfortable as is mid-September to October. In August, temperatures hit above 90 °F.

The city offers several luxury hotels. One of these is the Hassler, which was recently voted one of Travel and Leisure’s Best Hotels in the World. Located above the Spanish steps, the location is unbeatable and the views spectacular. The rooms are an exquisite mix of modern amenities and authentic antiques. The walls are even decorated with original paintings by titian and Tintoretto schools and the furniture is in original 18th century Louis XV style.

But you certainly won’t want to spend your whole time inside. Rome offers plenty of attractions.

The Coliseum (above), which once held more than 50,000 spectators of gladiator fights and other amusements, is possibly Rome’s most famous monument. You must purchase tickets to enter or you can go on a guided tour. I highly suggest having someone lead you around, because the stories of battle and war heroes are amazing.

Many of the guided tours will also take you through the adjoining Forum, which functioned as the center of political and social activity in the time of the emperors, acting as both its business and civic district.

Another worthy attraction is the Pantheon, recognized by its huge dome. It is an amazing structure to behold and houses the graves of many legendary Italians such as Renaissance painter Raphael and King Vittorio Emanuele I.

Another stop definitely worth making time for is the Trevi Fountain (above). The fountain was made famous in Fellini’s La Dolce Vita when Anita Ekberg took a dip in it. Tradition has it that throwing a coin over your left shoulder into the fountain guarantees a swift return to the world’s most beautiful city.

But don’t forget: When in Rome, do as the Romans do. There are plenty of high-end shops like Armani, Prada, Versace, Dolce and Gabbana to splurge. Also be sure to enjoy the rich cuisine. After indulging in antipasti, primi piatti, secondi piatti and contorni, be sure to stop by a gelletaria and get a scoop.
